The metal filter bags are fixed on the tube sheet in the upper part of the filter housing. Dust-laden high-temperature gas enters the dirty-air chamber and passes through the filter elements from outside to inside under the suction of the induced draft fan. Dust particles are captured on the outer surface of the elements, while clean gas passes through the filter layer into the clean-air chamber outside the flange. The dust layer retained on the outer surface further helps to filter dust from the high-temperature exhaust gas.

As the filter cake builds up, the pressure drop across the element increases. When the pressure drop reaches the design value, a differential-pressure sensor or an electronic timer activates the pilot valve, which opens the diaphragm valve and injects compressed gas into the filter inlet as an instantaneous pulse. The momentary reverse airflow and the pressure it carries remove the filter cake from the outer surface. The cake falls into the dust hopper, and the element begins a new filtration cycle.
